Turkish Airlines slogan, Widen Your World, has certainly widened our expectations once again of what to expect when flying in Europe and beyond. From the moment you check-in to arriving at your destination you are made to feel very welcome with the world-renowned Turkish hospitality. On the 4½ hour flight from Dublin to Istanbul the service you receive is outstanding. I will let you into a little secret, they even have seat back TV’s in Economy class. So traveling with the kids won’t be a problem. They will be entertained for hours.
We were very lucky to sample business class to and from Istanbul on our trip. Greeted on board we were shown to our seats and offered a pre-flight drink by the Turkish Airlines staff. On offer was a choice of mineral water, fruit juices and champagne. Shortly after we took off it wasn’t long before the cabin crew came round with hot towels to freshen up with before taking our meal and beverage order. We all faced a very difficult decision when deciding what to have from the menu. Our chef from DO&CO came round to serve our meals and the attention from the crew was outstanding. By the time we sampled the inflight entertainment that has a great selection of the latest blockbusters, TV shows and music it wasn’t long before we were arriving in Istanbul.
On our way home we were invited to use the Turkish Airlines VIP Lounge at Istanbul Airport. This is one of the best lounges that we have had the luck of sampling. It’s a 5,950 m2 peaceful haven spread over 2 floors in what is a very busy airport. So it was nice to have a little calm before the rush to the gate. Even though the business lounge was extremely busy it certainly doesn’t feel like it, it is very quiet, bright and airy. What’s available in the Turkish Airlines lounge? It includes the usual that any lounge offers nowadays WIFI, Showers, Meeting rooms and Conference facilities. But Turkish Airlines offer you just that little bit more. From Suit Rooms if you want a little shut-eye, maybe you want to take in a movie they even have that covered with their cinema. It also caters for the younger flyer as well with the dedicated kids area called Miles & Smile Heros. The lounge even has a golf simulator if you fancy a quick 18 holes before taking off.
Turkey is renowned for its food and in the lounge you won’t be disappointed they have a wealth of food available including Asian and Continental items like fresh fruit, fresh yogurt, pastries, hot food and they even have real honeycomb. And best of all Pide. Pide is a delicious flatbread with various toppings, a bit like a Turkish pizza. Throughout the lounge are alcohol stations with self-serve liquor. Separate stations have water, soft drinks and even a barista is on hand to help you out.
If this is what Turkish Airlines offers the world now what will the future hold. Well here’s a little preview of what will be on offer at Istanbul New Airport.
Istanbul New Airport – the name given to the project so far – will serve as Turkey’s primary airport and a hub for connecting flights between Europe and Asia. Located on the Black Sea Coast on the European side of Turkey, the airport will be 22 miles outside Istanbul with rail, metro and bus links
The airport of the future: Istanbul’s gigantic new hub will have six runways, the world’s biggest duty-free shop and a capacity of 200 MILLION passengers. Currently the construction is continuing and almost 43% of it has been completed. Terminal 1 alone will have a gross floor area of nearly 11 million square feet and the ability to serve 90 million passengers a year. The airport will start operating partly in September 2018 and be completed in 2023.
